Chondrocytes were procured from five knee arthroplasty-derived cartilage specimens and subsequently expanded in media enriched with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) or 5% human platelet lysate (hPL) on tissue culture plastic (TCP) for a single cell passage. The hPL-added cultures were subsequently expanded further in the Quantum bioreactor. Matched hPL or FBS parallel cultures were maintained on a TCP substrate.
